Making Space Safer with Electrolysis

Making Space Safer with Electrolysis Making Space Safer with Electrolysis It welches a moment that bordered on catastrophe A fire aboard the Mir space station in 1997 almost caused the loss of the orbiting platform and the deaths of its crew. With their route to an escape capsule blocked by the flames, the crew could only watch as the fire licked at the aluminum hull before dying out after 14 minutes. That fire was traced to an on-board oxygen generator. The generator relied upon an exothermic chemical reaction to create a breathable atmosphere for the crew of the space station. The successor to Mir is the International Space Station. It too has an on-board oxygen generator, though of a radically different design. The generator operates on a simple principle electrolysis, the dissociation of oxygen and hydrogen from water through the application of electricity. What makes the generator safe? The device uses a proton-exchange membrane (PEM) to separate the generated hydrogen and oxygen. In a PEM electrolyzer, water is oxidized at the oxygen electrode, or cell anode, to produce oxygen gas, releasing hydrogen ions (protons) and electrons. The hydrogen ions migrate from the cell anode to the cell cathode, or hydrogen electrode, under the effect of the electric field imposed across the cell, while the electrons are transferred by a dc power source. The protons and electrons recombine at the cell cathode to produce hydrogen. Liquid water is also released at the cathode due to a process called electro-osmotic drag. Oxygen and hydrogen are generated in a stoichiometric ratiotwo volume units of hydrogen for every one of oxygenat a rate proportional to the applied cell current.Because the membrane is non-porous, a PEM cell can safely separate product gases at superatmospheric pressures. Most of the design elements used to produce a water electrolysis cell stack were originally developed during the 1980s for submarine-based life untersttzung systems. An advanced cell design w as built by Hamilton Sundstrand in the 1990s that permitted high-pressure gas generation without the need for a pressure vessel or complex pressure control system. A sintered powder metal porous plate provided structural support to the electrolysis cell membrane while operating at high differential pressure, simultaneously allowing fluid transport both to and from the bulk water stream and the electrode surface. The result of this unique design was a greatly simplified fluid system, with only the oxygen fluid circuit maintained at elevated pressure. Although the requirements called for 6,000 hours of operation, a single cell assembly operating at nominal recharge conditions operated in the laboratory for over 54,000 hoursmaking this sort of high-efficiency oxygen-generating system ideal for the International Space Station. Installed in 2006, the system employs a 28-cell liquid cathode feed PEM electrolyzer operating at a current density of only 200 amps per square foot to produce oxy gen at new age pressure with 80-percent efficiency.Whats more, because the power from the photovoltaic cells rises and falls with the stations day-night cycle53 minutes of daylight followed by 37 minutes of darknessthe cell stack can switch rapidly into a standby mode where its electrical draw drops by 97 percent. Because its critical to get as much use as possible from the water, the water-hydrogen mixture exiting the cell stack is spun in a rotary device that separates the two components. Water recirculates through the loop to a heat exchanger to reject waste heat from the process before returning to the cell stack. The International Space Station is not the only orbital destination where this technology can be used. A high-pressure vapor feed electrolyzer was recently designed, built and tested as an alternate propulsion system for advanced satellites. The Water Rocket can electrolyze water using power from the vehicles solar array to charge storage tanks to 2,000 psia. When requi red, the high-pressure gases can be delivered to a hydrogen-oxygen thruster array to provide orbital reboost and maneuverability to satellites to improve their useful life, extend their capability and enhance their overall versatility.Energy storage solutions using water electrolysis and fuel cell systems are being examined for applications ranging from backup power systems and lighter-than-air vehicles to extraterrestrial bases on the moon and Mars. The basic architecture of a regenerative fuel cell energy storage system includes a high-pressure water electrolysis system, a fuel cell, a fluid management and storage system, a thermal management system and a power management system. Depending on whether the system has access to atmospheric oxygen, the oxygen from water electrolysis can either be stored as a pressurized gas or simply vented as a waste by-product.Fuel cell-powered vehicles hold the promise of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, provided th e hydrogen fuel is produced from a renewable energy source, such as a high-pressure water electrolyzer operating from wind, solar or nuclear power.Adapted from Backwards Runs the Reaction by Robert Roy, for Mechanical Engineering, April 2008.Most of the design elements used to produce a water electrolysis cell stack were originally developed during the 1980s for submarine-based life support systems.

A Dramatic Career Change for a Marketing Pro

A Dramatic Career Change for a Marketing ProA Dramatic Career Change for a Marketing ProCreative Director Jason Cocovinis found a new job as an experiential marketer at a dramatic-licensing shop. When he thinks back to his high schools drama productions, Jason Cocovinis remembers noting the name and logo of dramatic-licensing firm Music Theatre International (MTI) printed on every script book. He never thought as an adult that hed be working for the company. They were always the company you were afraid of, the 33-year-old Cocovinis laughed. If you didnt have the correct licensing rights to perform the shows, you could be in big troubleCocovinis, a New York marketing professional, had worked his way through various marketing, schlussverkauf and creative positions prior to his tenure as creative director for Jack Morton Worldwide, a global marketing firm that helps clients brand products and build consumer awareness.Cocovinis role in experiential marketing called for him to engage with v arious consumer products, health care and technology audiences in novel ways. He said he welches extremely happy in his position, doing what he loved. Yet as the economy started slowing he became increasingly wary about his job security.Exit. Stage leftOver the three years Cocovinis welches employed at Jack Morton, he said he saw a lot of attrition, some voluntary and some involuntary in the form of corporate downsizing. They went through several management changes, and by mid-July 2008, theyd made a number of significant cuts to their workforce, he said. Cocovinis said he saw the writing on the wall and began contacting his network of former colleagues, clients and friends.I saw a hint of what welches coming, so I began looking through my writing and creative samples and trying to get my resume in order, he said. I was developing my exit strategy.Cocovinis believed he was safe, at least temporarily, since he was working on a huge account with Verizon for which Jack Morton had been p aid a retainer. But the funds from the retainer were used up quickly, and Cocovinis found himself unemployed.IntermissionAt first, I panicked, Cocovinis said. I thought, What am I going to do? This market is terrifying Though hed built up many contacts in the industry during his 10-year career, he said he felt relieved when a friend suggested Ladders.Cocovinis said that while he was also using job-search sites such as MediaBistro.com, Monster.com and even Craigslist.org to search for positions, he found it confusing to differentiate one from another, and he was frustrated by their dearth of tracking and filtering tools. So Cocovinis signed up for MktgLadder and sent his resume in for a free critique. Although he said his resume was in excellent shape and didnt need much additional help, the feedback he received helped him fine-tune his writing samples, cover letter and make small changes that enhanced his presentation to potential employers. As a writer and a marketing person, this s ervice and the feedback I got on my resume and samples was really valuable to me, he said.Over the next four months, Cocovinis went on several interviews, some of which he gleaned via Ladders and some from other sources. He said that he wasnt too concerned about focusing on one particular area of the marketing and creative fields.I was relatively indiscriminate about what I was applying for, because quite honestly at that point I just needed a job any job he said. I looked into interactive marketing, consumer products, I even looked into the nonprofit sector.Since Cocovinis was interviewing for high-level positions in the marketing field, he said the interview process was lengthy and intense, and often involved developing presentations and putting together fake campaigns to demonstrate to potential employers his ability to organize, to address specific audience segments and meet deadlines.By December, Cocovinis was beginning to feel slightly discouraged. One promising lead with ano ther large agency didnt pan out. But one listing on Ladders.com did pique his interest.I found a listing for an interactive-marketing job, he said. Because his resume, cover letter and samples were already in Ladders online database, it was a matter of a few mouse clicks to apply for the position. The listing was really vague, but I applied and found it was through a headhunting firm.Second actFifteen minutes after sending his application, the headhunter called Cocovinis and asked him to drop in that day to discuss the position and his experience. While he was wary, he went and was pleasantly surprised to find the recruiting firm was extremely knowledgeable about the company they represented - MTI - and the position they were looking to fill.Normally recruiters arent as well-versed as they should be on the clients and jobs they represent, but they sold me on the job, he said. The recruiter made some phone calls and set Cocovinis up with an interview at MTI the next day.I interviewe d on a Thursday and I was offered the position on Monday, he said. Although he totenstill had to complete some sample campaigns, Cocoviniss recruiter set up a one-on-one meeting with MTIs president that solidified the companys decision to hire him.Curtain callNow, as director of marketing at MTI, Cocovinis said he regularly draws on skills from his previous agency experience and his familiarity with interactive and experiential campaigns. Most recently, hes been tasked with developing a new Web site for MTI to reach the worldwide theater community as well as integrate some social- and professional-networking capabilities. At MTI, we grant the rights to perform any number of the 350 Broadway musical titles we have in our catalog, he said, so his audience includes big Broadway troupes as well as amateur groups, high-school drama clubs and community theaters, he said.I love this, Cocovinis said. Its really pulled together a lot of my different areas of expertise. Its all about connecting with potential audiences and making sure theater is accessible and exciting for folks.

Why We Joined The Global Work Remote Day

Why We Joined The Global Work Remote DayWhy We Joined The Global Work Remote DayMore than 20% of workers worldwide work remotely. There are 36% mora coworking spaces around the world than last year. Remote working is green. My point is, the numbers around flexible and remote working are rising and it seems to be the wave of future. A better future with happier, more productive employees, and booming businesses. At , we also let our kollektiv work remotely. Thats why when our friends from Bynder (marketing software that allows brands to easily create, find, and use content) asked us to join their veranstaltung Global Work Remote Day, we didnt hesitate for a moment. To give you a better idea of what remote work means for Bynder, we had a chat with Kristel Moedt, People Talent Director. Heres why we joined the initiative and why you should too.1. Kristel, how did you come up with the idea for Global Work Remote Day?The idea was born when we were evaluating our unlimited holiday policy, and it appeared to be a success. Our employees really love it, as its all about flexibility and it also reflects the trust we have in them. Also, its the fact that we realize how important it is to have a balance between your work and private life. Working remotely gives our team members an opportunity to have that. Its already quite common at Bynder, but with this initiative, we really wanted to show to our team that we support and trust them, that its OK to work remotely. We all know that its fine if we do it from time to time, one colleague at a time. What we want to prove is, that even if the whole company works remotely, it can still work. All you need is to have great tools and effective communication in place.2. Whats the main benefit for employees whove never worked remotely?Experiencing that to work in a different environment is great. It will enable them to think about new projects, initiatives and be surrounded by new people. Also, our international colleagues are booking flights home, so that they can work during the day and then spend extra time with their family.Related articlesHow Hotjar built a 100% distributed companyWhat I mastered about remote workingStop with team building events, try a retreat instead3. What can the Global Work Remote Day bring to companies? It can raise awareness amongst their employees about the fact that they trust them. Its like saying Hey, we trust you. Its elend only about being at the office, but about the output, and we trust you, we think its helpful for you to work from another location than just the office. Its a simple, but a good signal. It also reinforces companies company culture.4. How often should companies close their doors and have a whole company remote day?Working remotely is something that you can do any time as an individual (if your company offers that). But of course, it would be great if we can make this a yearly event for many companies out there and make it bigger every year. I think companies sh ould do it when they feel they need it. 5. How often can your employees work remotely? Is working from home counted as remote? We are very flexible with that. Base principle is employees can work from wherever they like, but they need to use their common sense and make sure their team knows whether theyll be at the office or not. They can pick a location that suits their requirements at the moment. It can be home, cafe, or a coworking space. Also, its important that they are available to contact if theyre remote.6. What do we often get wrong about remote working?A lot of companies say that they give a lot of freedom to their employees and responsibility but they have thick handbooks with all kinds of rules and regulations on when you can take holidays and work remotely, etc. So really, companies should embrace that flexibility and show their employees trust. What works for one, might not work for the other. Sometimes its important to take your time to think about a more complicated t ask or new projects that you wanna start with, just recharge a bit, stay at home. For such situations, another environment can be very beneficial.7. What is the one challenge your company faced because of remote working and how did you deal with it?One is communication. The team has to know if you will be in the office or not and its important that they know how they can reach you.The other challenge is for the managers. They need to make sure they manage the output, not just an input. Its not about the amount of hours one spends in the office. So it requires more of feedback and coaching skills.8. How can companies start focusing on the output? What is really important for us is situation up clear quarterly goals for the team. We dont have formal performance appraisals, but we do have a 360 degrees feedback throughout the year. Team members receive feedback from their peers and managers, but they also give feedback to their managers. This supports an open conversation and honesty to wards each other. We do this 3 times a year Managers Team 3x per yearTeam Manager 2x per year. Also, were using the app Impraise for several things Asking and giving real time feedback (after e.g. a presentation, meeting, etc.) Peer feedback and self evaluation 3x per year Feedback from your manager 3x per year Feedback from team to manager 2x per year Quarterly goal setting Measuring Bynder happinessWe really believe that everybody who works at Bynder is doing their best and taking their responsibility to help us develop as a company, which secures our positive culture/attitude.Over to youRemote working can bring a long list of benefits to your company and team.
